**Instagram integration** · feed, Reels & carousels

# Publish your Shopify products to Instagram automatically

AutoPost turns catalog products into Instagram feed posts, Reels and carousels — caption generated from product data, media taken from the product gallery, published on the schedule you set through the official Instagram API.

- ****Reels**** — short-form video posts

- ****Carousel**** — multi-image posts

- ****2,200**** — characters of caption

- ****Auto**** — format per media type

Post types

## What AutoPost publishes here

The post type follows the media on your product, so you do not have to choose per post.

| Type | Built from | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Image post** | A single product photo | Clean product shots, price drops, announcements |
| **Video post** | A product video | Anything motion explains better than a still |
| **Reel** | A vertical product video | Reach beyond your existing followers |
| **Carousel** | Several product images or videos | Colour variants, styling ideas, before and after |

Permissions

## Which permissions we request, and why

These are the scopes the authorisation screen will show you. AutoPost asks for nothing beyond them.

| Scope | What it allows | Why AutoPost needs it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **`instagram_business_basic`** | Read the basic details of the authorised professional account. | To show which Instagram account is connected and confirm posts go to the right profile. |
| **`instagram_business_content_publish`** | Create posts on the authorised account. | The core function: publishing the scheduled image, video, Reel or carousel. |
| **`instagram_business_manage_comments`** | Read and manage comments on the account's own posts. | So published posts can be managed in context; AutoPost does not moderate or reply on your behalf without your action. |

### Requirements and limits

- **Account type**: Professional — business or creator
- **Linked Page**: Required: the account must be connected to a Facebook Page
- **Caption**: Up to 2,200 characters, validated before queueing
- **Media**: Images and video from your product gallery, adapted per format
- **Aspect ratio**: Vertical media performs best for Reels

### Worth knowing

- A personal Instagram account cannot publish through any API — switch it to professional in Instagram's settings first
- The linked Facebook Page requirement comes from the platform, not from AutoPost
- Vertical video is published as a Reel, which is where most new reach comes from
- Captions are validated before queueing, so an over-long template is caught while you edit it

Setup

## Connecting takes about two minutes

### Open Accounts in AutoPost

In your Shopify admin, open AutoPost and go to **Accounts**. Instagram has its own card there.

### Click Connect

You are redirected to the platform's authorisation screen. Log in with the account that manages your professional profile.

### Approve the permissions

Review the scopes listed above and approve. You return to AutoPost with the account connected and its handle shown.

### Add Instagram to an automation

Create or edit an automation, tick **Instagram** in the publishing targets, choose a template and set the schedule.

### Check the results

The **Posts** and **Calendar** pages show each post's status and, if something failed, the reason the platform returned.

Questions

## About this integration

**Why does Instagram need a professional account?**

Because Instagram's publishing API is only available to business and creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page. It is a platform requirement that applies to every third-party publishing tool.

**Can AutoPost post Stories?**

The integration focuses on feed posts, Reels and carousels — the formats that stay on your profile and keep working after the first 24 hours.

**Will my Instagram and Facebook posts be identical?**

Only if you want them to be. One automation can target both, or you can run two automations with different templates so each network gets copy that suits it.

**What happens if the connection expires?**

AutoPost refreshes tokens in the background. If the platform invalidates the connection — a password change or revoked access — the account is flagged as disconnected and you are asked to authorise again.

**Data and controls**

AutoPost stores the encrypted authorisation tokens, the account identifier and the profile details shown in the app, plus the posts you scheduled and their results. Disconnect the account in AutoPost, or revoke access on the platform, and the tokens are deleted.
