How to auto-post Shopify products to TikTok
TikTok rewards accounts that post consistently. That is easy to say and hard to do when you also run a shop. This guide sets up a system where your catalog does the posting: you configure it once, and new products announce themselves on TikTok for as long as you let the automation run.
Contents
1. What you need first
- A TikTok account that can post. Any account permitted to publish will do. If TikTok has restricted posting on the account, no third-party app can publish for it.
- Products with usable media. A product with a video can become a TikTok video post; a product with photos becomes a photo post or a carousel. Products with no media cannot be published anywhere.
- AutoPost installed on your store. The free plan is enough to test the whole flow — five posts a month, all features enabled.
Open your catalog and check the products you plan to promote. Vertical media performs better on TikTok, and a product with a short clip will almost always outperform a static photo. If a few key products lack media, upload it before you build the automation — AutoPost can only publish what exists.
2. Connect TikTok to AutoPost
In your Shopify admin, open AutoPost and go to Accounts. On the TikTok card, click Connect. You are taken to TikTok's own authorisation page, where you log in and review what the app is asking for:
user.info.basicanduser.info.profile— so the app can show which account is connected;video.publish— so it can publish the posts you schedule.
Approve, and TikTok returns you to AutoPost with the connection in place, showing your handle and avatar. From then on the app refreshes its access token in the background; you do not have to reconnect daily. If you ever revoke access from TikTok's settings, the app notices and asks you to authorise again.
3. Video post or photo post?
AutoPost picks the post type from the media on the product, so the decision is really about what you attach to your products.
| If the product has… | TikTok receives | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| A video | A video post with your caption | Demonstrations, unboxing, texture and fit — anything motion explains better than a still |
| One image | A single photo post | Clean product shots, quote-style posts, price drops |
| Several images | A photo carousel, up to 35 images, first image as cover | Colour variants, before and after, styling ideas, a small lookbook |
You do not need studio footage. A ten-second clip of the product being handled, shot on a phone in portrait orientation, is a perfectly good TikTok video post — and once it lives on the product, AutoPost can reuse it.
4. Write a TikTok caption template
Go to Templates. You can start from a built-in template, but TikTok captions have their own character, so it is worth building one deliberately. A pattern that works:
- A hook in the first line. The first few words are what people read while scrolling. Lead with the benefit or the surprise, not with the SKU.
- One line about the product. Insert
{PRODUCT_TITLE}, and{PRODUCT_PRICE}if price is part of the appeal. - A call to action and the link.
{PRODUCT_URL}gives the exact product page. - Three to five relevant hashtags. Enough to give context; not a wall of tags.
For copy that varies by product, drop in an {AI_RESULT} block and let the model write the hook from that product's own description. A workable prompt: “Write a two-sentence TikTok caption for this product. Start with a hook, keep it friendly and specific, no hashtags, no emoji.” Keep the hashtags in your fixed template so they stay under your control.
AutoPost caps TikTok captions at 2,200 characters, which is far more than you should use. For a photo post, TikTok also takes the first 90 characters as the post title — another reason to make the opening line count.
5. Build the automation
Open Automations and create one. For a new-arrivals feed:
| Condition | Product creation time — last 7 days |
|---|---|
| Template | The TikTok template you just wrote |
| Networks | TikTok (add Instagram if the media suits both) |
| Schedule | Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 11:00 |
| After the run | Keep posting on schedule |
Save it. AutoPost immediately fills the queue with the products that match, and the Calendar shows what will go out and when. Nothing is published until the first scheduled slot, so you have time to read through the queued captions and fix anything that reads badly.
6. Choose a posting rhythm
Consistency matters more than volume. Three posts a week, every week, beats fourteen posts in one burst followed by silence — and bursts risk TikTok's spam protections, which reject posts when too many arrive in a short window.
- Starting out: two to three posts a week on one network. Learn what performs before you scale.
- Established: daily, with a second network added once your media library can sustain it.
- Campaigns: a short, dense run — but set the end-of-run action to Disable automation so it stops when the sale does.
Spread slots across the day rather than stacking them. AutoPost respects your plan's daily cap (2, 5 or 10 posts) which conveniently doubles as a guardrail against over-posting.
7. Check the first results
After the first slot, open Posts. Each entry shows its network, scheduled time and status. A published post carries the result TikTok returned; a failed one carries the reason. Read that reason before changing anything — it usually names the exact problem, such as an image above 20 MB or a video longer than the account allows.
Then look at TikTok itself. Does the caption read like your brand? Is the cover frame the one you would have chosen? Adjust the template rather than individual posts — a template fix improves every future post at once.
8. Mistakes worth avoiding
- Publishing the identical caption to every network. A caption that works on Pinterest reads as flat on TikTok. Use separate templates per network where it matters.
- Letting the automation run on the whole catalog from day one. Start with a segment — new arrivals or one collection — and expand once the output looks right.
- Ignoring out-of-stock products. AutoPost skips them for you; do not work around that.
- Forgetting the cover frame. For a carousel, the first image is the cover. Order the product media accordingly.
- Publishing content you do not own. Supplier footage and stock music both carry rights and platform rules. Use media you are licensed to publish.
